Question 1

What is quantum computing?

Accepted Answer

Quantum computing is a new way of processing information. It uses the principles of quantum mechanics, including superposition, entanglement and interference, to solve certain problems exponentially faster than classical computers. Instead of bits that are either 0 or 1, quantum computers use qubits that can represent both states simultaneously, enabling massively parallel computation for specific workloads such as optimisation, simulation and cryptography.

Question 2

How do quantum computers work?

Accepted Answer

Quantum computers manipulate qubits, the physical systems such as superconducting circuits, trapped ions or photons, using precisely controlled pulses to create superpositions and entanglement. A quantum algorithm steers these qubits through a sequence of gates so that, at the end, measuring them yields the answer with high probability. Today's machines still need extreme cooling and error correction, but the engineering is improving rapidly.

Question 3

Is quantum computing the future of enterprise technology?

Accepted Answer

For specific, high value workloads, yes. Quantum will not replace classical computing, but it is expected to become a critical accelerator for problems classical hardware cannot solve efficiently. These include portfolio optimisation, drug discovery, materials simulation, logistics and post-quantum cryptography. Enterprises that prepare now will be positioned to capture advantage as fault-tolerant systems mature later this decade.

Question 4

When will quantum computers be commercially available?

Accepted Answer

They already are. Cloud-accessible quantum hardware from IBM, Google, IonQ, Quantinuum, Rigetti, and others is available today for experimentation and early production use cases. Fault-tolerant, large-scale quantum advantage on commercially meaningful problems is forecast between 2027 and 2030, which is why qubion advises starting readiness work and proof-of-concepts now rather than waiting.

Question 5

Will quantum computers break encryption?

Accepted Answer

Eventually, yes. A sufficiently large quantum computer running Shor's algorithm could break today's RSA and elliptic curve cryptography, undermining the foundations of secure communications, digital signatures and identity. The threat is not immediate, but "harvest now, decrypt later" attacks make it urgent. NIST has already standardised post-quantum cryptography (PQC) algorithms, and enterprises should begin migrating sensitive long lived data and key infrastructure today.
